Research Positions (Summer 2016)
Hunter-MSKCC Summer Internship Program in Microbial Genomics
- Title: Bioinformatics Research Assistant
- Number of positions: Two
- Supervisors: Dr Weigang Qiu (Hunter) & Dr Joao Xavier (MSKCC)
- Location: Belfer Research Building, 413, East 69 Street, New York, NY 10021
- Dates: June 1 - July 13, 2016 (6 weeks)
- Weekly Hours: 18 hours a week (Three 6-hour work days)
- Stipend: $2,100 per position
- Project Title: Identification of genomic determinants of phenotypic evolution in Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Project Description: We have previously sequenced the entire genomes of 20 hospital isolates of P. aeruginosa and measured their phenotypes including antibiotic resistance, biofilm formation, and swarming motility. An algorithm has been developed to identify genetic variations associated with these phenotypes. The objective of the summer project is to design computational methods to validate the effectiveness of the genotype-phenotype mapping algorithm. Our approach would be to design and implement algorithms to simulate the evolution of traits in bacterial populations.

- Familiar with the LINUX Operating System (e.g., Hunter CS 132)
- Fluency with one programming language (Perl/BioPerl, Python/BioPython, or C++) (e.g., Hunter BIOL 425)
- B or better grade in a molecular genetics course (e.g., Hunter BIOL 203)
- Background Reading: Convergent evolution of hyperswarming leads to impaired biofilm formation in pathogenic bacteria
- Application Contact: Email Dr Qiu (weigang@genectr.hunter.cuny.edu) for an interview during his office hours on Wed 5-7pm (or other dates & hours by appointment)
